Dr. Li Zhao received a High Priority (HP) Grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, there is increased grant funding to improve road safety and support truckers. This funding is helping us move closer to the U.S. Department of Transportation goal of zero fatalities on our roadways.

Congressionally mandated as a part of MAP-21, Electronic Logging Devices are intended to create a safer work environment for drivers, and tracks, manages, and shares records of duty status (RODS) data. An ELD synchronizes with an engine to automatically record driving time for more accurate off-duty and on-duty time.

The goal of the project, "Electronic Logging Device (ELD) Mandates: Equity Considerations," is to gain a better understanding of the implementation of electronic logging devices (ELDs) that support the Hours-of-Service (HOS) compliance from a user's perspective. Specifically, the aim is to improve the implementation of ELDs to enhance operational efficiency.

The survey will help us gather insights into the benefits, challenges, or needs a that the use of ELDs may present to both truck drivers and trucking companies, especially for small businesses and owner operators. Ultimately, the hope is this will lead to safer, more reliable logistics, improved workforce retention, and equitable benefits.
